Today we will drive for 6 hours to Lachen which is a small beautiful village in Sikkim. The village consists of about 150 houses and is set in a serene surrounding. Lachen is situated on a grassy flat land and commands amazing views of the snow capped peaks all around. The village is rather small and consists of 150 houses, most of them shepherds. At Lachen we will explore the monastery there. This monastery in was built in 1806 and belongs to the Nyingma sect of Buddhism. The Monastery is perched on the top of the village and there are panoramic views of the surrounding hills and country side from there. We will halt overnight at Lachen (BLD)
Chopta valley is situated an altitude of 4,000 m. It is a place rich in alpine vegetation, orchids, rhododendrons and other flowers. There are many rivers running across the valley. We will drive to Chopta, but after covering a distance of 30 km, we stop at Thangu village for a while. Thangu is a small village situated at an altitude of 13,000 ft. The village is beautiful and covered by alpine flowers. Continue further towards the Gurudongmar Lake. This sacred lake is believed to posses the divine power of granting children to couples who come and pray here. Situated at an elevation of 17,100 feet, this is one of the highest lakes in the world and in the recent years, a much sought after tourist spot. The lake freezes over during winters except at one spot which the devout believe has been specially blessed. Interestingly, the myth of Gurudongmar is believed as reverentially be the Sikhs as by the local Buddhists. (Foreign tourists are not allowed to visit Gurudongmar. They have to return from Lachen).
