Muktinath (3798m) is an important pilgrimage spot for both Hindus and Buddhist Gompa and pagoda style temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The most interesting aspect of the area, however, is the spot where burning of natural gas issued from the rock from the same place as a small spring. Earth, air, fire, water an important religious combination.
The famous Mukthinath temple [Temple of Lord Vishnu] is at the highest point of the trek, at 3710 metres, perched below the formidable Torung La. Of note, Kagbeni is the last point that foreigners can go without restriction into the kingdom of Mustang, and houses a fine gompa of the yellow hat Gelup sect and a private gompa in “The Red House”. Here some people still dress in traditional Tibetan costume reminiscent of the days when this was an important trade route for Nepal, Tibet and India.
