“I wish our trip could have been longer, and am determined to return”
I visited Bhutan in April 2006 with Jen Chambers, a postgraduate student, to supervise her fieldwork. Although we worked quite hard, the trip felt more like a holiday - partly due to the wonderful scenery, wildlife and culture, but also in no small part because of the Bhutanese guides who travelled with us. They all conspired to make sure we were comfortable on the long drives to the east, and in a variety of camp sites, so that we could work long days and know we would be pampered in the evenings.
Our driver drove our vehicle throughout the trip with care and courtesy, and adapted effortlessly to the strange, stop-start nature of roadside geological fieldwork. I was particularly impressed with his driving through thick mist down from Thrumshingla to Ura one evening! His quietly-spoken manner and easy-going sense of humour made our time in Bhutan all the more enjoyable. His knowledge and love of his country is evident, and he went out of his way many times to accommodate our wishes.
As a result, I came away from Bhutan with some fabulous memories of landscapes, especially the rich forests, and wildlife (including Pine Martens, deer and a host of beautiful birds). I wish our trip could have been longer, and am determined to return. I would have no hesitation in recommending Bhutan Bigfoot Trekking, and Karma as a guide.
